How to Shop for a DJ
by Kathryn Hollingsworth

You may think choosing a DJ for your wedding is as simple as selecting a name in the phone book but you probably haven't considered that the person you choose is someone who will be setting the tone for the party that follows your ceremony. Knowing that, you'll want to take some time to ensure a pleasant experience

Here are some things to keep in mind when searching for the perfect DJ for your wedding celebration:
  • Ask friends or family members for recommendations.
  • Select a licenced, insured DJ, preferably a member of a professional organization.
  • Ensure that your DJ uses professional equipment and has a backup plan in the event of equipment malfunction, illness or accident.
  • Ask the DJ for references from satisfied customers.
  • Make sure when booking that you obtain a written contract which clearly states the terms of the agreement.
  • Meet with the DJ in person and ask to see them work.
  • The DJ you choose should have emcee experience and know how to interact with the crowd, getting them to dance and enjoy themselves.
  • Request a sound or video sample of the DJ talking with music in the background; this can be used to make an unpressured decision at a later date. The sound or video clip could be on tape, CD or emailed as an MP3 or wav file. You can take a vote of the people helping you plan the wedding if this is the person that is right for you.
  • Choose someone who is willing to go over your musical choices in advance and make sure the DJ accepts requests, as long as they are in keeping with your wishes.
  • Request a printout or have emailed a list of songs they have available.
  • The DJ you choose should be appropriately dressed for your event, whether formal or semi-formal, at no extra charge to you.
  • Payment terms and possible overtime should be discussed in advance and should be a part of the written contract as well.
  • Discuss with the DJ if you will be offering to feed them or if they should make other arrangements.

To sum it up, you want to find someone professional, personable and enthusiastic about their work. The DJ you choose should show an interest in your musical tastes and help you to select songs that will appeal to you as well as your guests. An experienced DJ will ensure that everybody enjoys your party!
